10 Mistakes You Must Avoid While Running Network Cable

It is important to install properly your network cabling, as improper installation can cripple your network performance, earlier days people without specific knowledge about network cables were assigned to do jobs by virtue of their other responsibilities. For example, telephone technicians and electricians used to do all sorts of data cabling jobs. Nevertheless, network cabling is less forgiving, so some common mistakes one must avoid.
  1. For a business networking, it is always important to think for the future. For example, presently you have a provision 100Mbps network connection, but suppose your organisation has to move to a new location, so would you like to go for the old cable system or a new one? For a high-end cabling system, the labour cost is the most expensive part of the project, so it's a mistake when people don't require expensive cabling system, and not sure whether they stay permanently or not, still spend lots of money in network cable.
  2. Another mistake is to install separate cables for voice and data. Most companies think that instead of wasting significant expense in twisted pair cabling system, it is better to install different cabling for voice and data needs. Cabling is not itself expensive but the labour cost is so expensive. So, rising services such as VoIP, the need of existing data cable can often get away.
  3. One another mistake is to run network cable parallel with electrical cables. Big companies like Siemens Telephone system uses “UTP” - unshielded twisted pair to run their data cable system. These companies also use cable management to manage their cable system. When an unshielded cable runs parallel to an electric cable, the communication get effected and become noisy. The disruption in magnetic field creates difficulty in transmitting message from point A to point B.
  4. Not testing cable infrastructure is another common flaw of people. It is important when your cable is installed, you take appropriate tools to ensure the length and cable specifications to match your requirements.
  5. People generally don't follow laws/codes/ordinances and that is quite a big mistake. First of all, for your own safety, it is important to follow your codes on installing cables.
