How to Plan Cat5 Cabling in Your House?

Wireless is not a complicated process, but due to multiple applications such as multimedia sharing, bandwidth share and others, people are a bit concerned about wireless security and opt for hard wired solutions for home networking. A wired network at home is convenient because it gives a high-speed internet access, secure file sharing, fast media streaming and much more.

Planning for your Cat5e ethernet cabling

Cat5e or Cat6 ethernet cabling is a good way to wire your connection, but you need certain initial consideration before you finally install the network.

First thing is to decide which room(s) you want to wire. For easy telephone system maintenance, it is convenient to create your networking cabling in a location nearby your cable television.

Second thing to consider is the number of ports you need each location. If you have multiple game consoles or network-enabled television set, you need at least two connections. There are generally three network connection ports behind a general TV, and since the wall plates come in 1,2,3,4 and 6-jack configuration, it is recommended to opt for 4 connections. It will give you extra flexibility without the necessity for local switches.

To decide the path your CAT 6 or CAT5 cabling takes is also a significant factor to take into consideration. If you have a single floor and a basement, your basement would be a better path. If you are not privileged with a basement, your attic would be a good place for your cable distribution. Depending on the path, the cable length is also important. The maximum cable length for gigabyte speeds over copper UTP cabling is 100m.

Some cool additions to your home network

  • File server or NAS can enable you to hold all your multimedia including 1TB of storage for music, TV shows etc. You can stream multimedia to any computers on your network.
  • XBMX can soft modded your Xbox, also configure with the DVD remote receivers for Xbox so your can control from the Harmony. So, you don’t need Hulu or other media.
  • IP based telephones can give you access to internet, so you can skip the bills.
  • You just need a file server set-up, and install a bunch of DVR cards. Now, you can record different shows from your satellite television and store them on the file server.
